It is through our bodies that we perceive and make sense of the world. The experience of sensations in lost limbs provides two contradictory realities simultaneously: the reality of a living limb and of its destruction. These are illusions that may represent an attempt at restoration of the sense of unity and cohesion of the self. The Venus de Milo displays body ideals, as well as deviance. Her disability is mute, we don’t have a vision of a disassembled body, but the Euclidean ideal of it.
