ECVP VOL 03 | São Paolo |

The new volume of the EXQUISITE CORPSE VIDEO PROJECT has its Brazilian premiere next Tuesday, May 24th, at the Atelier397 in São Paulo. The screening will be followed by a live streaming performance by the artists Niclas Hallberg and Stina Pehrsdotter.
“…  just a quick not to say that we had a wonderful screening yesterday, a lot of people showed up (about 60, which crowded the space, very good for a Tuesday night) and they watched the film with a lot of focus. we had some interesting comments, it seems like this corpse has a better flow, probably because it’s one single long movie. also we have some recurrent themes/images, which is always a mystery to me. I plan to upload it as soon as we finish it (still 3 artists left to work). after the screening, we had a live performance by a local duo, and then the streaming performance by Niclas and Stina. by then the crowd had diminished, but people stayed until the end. not me though, I had to leave after 30min of their performance. well renata padovan and marcelo amorim, who are also from the ECVP, can comment more, they were there too. btw, Atelier 397 is probably the coolest artist run space in São Paulo, and it’s run by Marcelo Amorim. so thanks to him to promote this screening! xoxo ” Kika

Portrait of a Silent Worker, part of the Expondo series, is about our “blindness” which blocks out the view of the  cleaners’ daily routine around our cities. The maintenance workers personal identity is lost: they have became invisible. In this portrait, I attempted to recover the visibility of the women that cleans the trash from a public toilet by stressing their movements as a performance art.

Recorded in a public toilet at 29ª Bienal de São Paulo, Brasil.

total running time: 75 min.
The Exquisite Corpse Video Project (ECVP) is a unique video collaboration among artists from all over the world, inspired by the Surrealist creation method, the “Exquisite Corpse”. Using the semi-blind, sequential method of the surrealists’ game, ECVP participants create video art in response to the final seconds of the previous member’s work. Each member is asked to incorporate these seconds into their piece, creating transitions as they please, until everyone’s vision is threaded together into an instigating final “corpse.”
While the Surrealists are said to have created the method almost a century ago, only recently could such a fast-paced, pan-global, audiovisual variation of this exercise be produced. The inspiring process of exchange among ‘strangers’ from around the world illuminates the possibilities of globalized, collective creativity.
The project is coordinated by Brazilian video-artist, Kika Nicolela. In the first Volume of the project (2008), 9 videos were created in collaboration by 36 artists from 16 countries. For the Directors Lounge 2011,
the curator selected 5 videos from this volume.
